It was posted in International News on the 12th July by TONYmercury under BHPBILLITON,I made a comment regarding the start of BMA crewing their own coal trains in Queensland, the fact this was in play has been out there for a little while and the Rail manager from BHPB Iron Ore will be moving to BMA in a couple of months to kickstart BMA running their own trains.

I agree they'll go offshore for them, QR national are in no way a competitor to BMA as they have no interest in competing for contracts. They only want to haul their own coal. Both Daunia and Caval Ridge are new mines so it makes sense. It is similar to what Xstrata have done in the hunter but they used freight liner to get the accreditation.

Which are just 3800/71 class with a PhotoShopped livery. Expect the locos to look just like the 3800/71 class. Not sure about the livery.

My mistake, should have specified livery.

The unanswered question (well one of them anyway) is who will crew these trains? Will BMA employee their own crews or will PN supply the crews?

Why not GWA, Freightliner, Skilled, Momentum or even QRN just for starters?

Anything is possible.

I have been given the impression they will employ and crew their own trains thru qualified and trainee drivers.

Absolutely. I used PN as an example. Other than PN & QRN nobody else would have route/loco qualified drivers at present.

Someone needs to Photoshop the BHP "Bubbles" scheme on to a 3800/71 Class. Should look sweet........as much as a box can look sweet! 8)

Not too sure about the crews (could be perm bhp, or qrn, pn, skilled) however PN has signed a service contract to provision and maintain the BHP trains.

After all of these years  BHP has finally got  what it wanted in the Queensland Coal Fields.....there own railway.  When BHP first ventured into Queensland Coal, they argued with the Joh's National Party Govt at the time that they wanted to own and operate their own coal trains but the government refused to allow it to happen.  There would be enough ex QR drivers in BHPBIO in the Pilbara who would have  local knowledge of the Queensland Coalfields to train up other drivers and also there would be sufficient QRN drivers who would jump ship to BHP.

They have already recruited their Operations Supervisors. So I would assume that eventually they will be aiming for fulltime drivers as well.

PN crews for the start, then they will get their own crews. Hay Point sign on and FIFO Moranbah sign on.  Offer better conditions than Aurizon or PN and they will have plenty of drivers willing to go across.  Duplication from Dally bay juction to Hay Point is progressing well.
