It provides a record of all train movements between Melbourne and Adelaide on the standard gauge and all broad gauge movements between Geelong and Ballarat. It's a useful resource if you're out trainspotting (especially if you are a few hours away from the loop) and you can see what's heading your way when it's updated.

Gheringhap Loop is just out of Geelong on the Geelong - Ballarat broad gauge line and on the standard gauge line to Adelaide.

Surprisingly quite a bit.

on a typical friday you will get 2 PN broad guage grain's, sometimes even 3 or 4. The "fruity" (Mildura Freight) with a G,X,A (basically any of PN's rural fleet). Then on the odd occasion you get an El Zorro BG grain, the "rolling museum".

As well as the above you can also get Metro transfers to Ballarat, works trains, and the odd heritage special.

Gheringhap Loop sighting's main advantage as pointed out is being able to track the journey of interstate and rural standard guage trains. Myself included uses this resource to track where I will head if Im going out.

for instance today, I've seen the GWA grain train ex Murtoa through Stawell at 9ish am. I'll watch Gheringhap loop and guesstimate a time it will Arrive in Geelong itself, where I plan to get it. Twisted Evil

This is one example of what can be achieved using such a simple site, paired with various Flickr based webcams the planning available is a fantastic resource for those wishing to be er.... better prepared! Laughing

Hope this helps!  8)
