Interesting, as I heard (Love a good rumour) she wanted all the S sets gone by May, and was laughed at.

It is actually. I agree.

Cars that have been cut up:

3842
3829
3749 (I think the under frame of 3749 you can actually see)
3762 (you can see being cut up already)
3962 (possibly)
4131 (possibly)

If there's anything wrong with that list, please correct me. Smile Thanks.

It's very sad, and being my favourite carriages in the network, it is quite heartbreaking to see this, but that's life. They've reached the end of their lives. And compared to other rollingstock, such as your new A sets, they don't meet the criteria met, for e.g they lack Air conditioning (which is probably one of the only reasons why the K and C sets will last), they allow passengers to travel between the carriage doors, are more needed for maintenance and are now showing there age very clearly. I'm sure there's more reasons, but that's all I can think of.

The roads were filled in this sort of order on the 14/2:

Road 1: 3872-3821-3975-3885-4127-3896-3749-3829-3842
Road 2: 3054-3813-3823-4025-3867-3750-3024-3762
Road 3: 3055-4071-3830-3901-4710-3860-4131-3962
Road 4: 3893-(4150)-4063-3943-3894-4719-4723-3958

(Cars underlined are the ones that were scrapped. 4150 was put in brackets, because that's were it was before being sent to Flemington MC with 3814. 3872 was added later on. Can't remember the date).

Apparently S144 was condemned, those cars are - 3811-4040-4933-3906, and sent to Flemington this morning. Any confirmation of that?

However, electrax, please don't use quotes that don't fit what you're going to post. If you can't find a handy quote, just use the reply button without a quote.

4150 was the "Royal" carriage for HM QE2 in 1980 from Bankstown to Martin Place.  There's an earlier mention on one of these forums.

Thanks, Dave and Sydny Trains. I wanted to make sure that the information was available to those interested in the history of those cars. When I received my copy of the book and noticed that the information had been omitted, I did contact Eveleigh Press. Already three cars from the 4021 - 4045 series, 4025, 4026 & 4040, have been involved in the withdrawal process.

Also, D4043 to T, 1996?

electrax - Thanks for the info of the conversions of D cars to T cars. Smile I was just saying to be a bit careful of using particular quotes. Smile And Im very aware of 4150's significance. And thank you for the info of S144.

Scott - Thanks for the info of S82 and 3872. Smile Do you have an exact date as to when 3872 was moved to Chullora and why is was moved to Chullora instead of being sent to Enfield?

Not everyone loves them. I personally appreciate them as an ending era of Sydney, but a nice Tangara puts up a good fight for my heart ;P

Yeah I know. Like I said on fb, everyone has different preferences. It's nt the beginning of the apocalypse. Smile Me personally I love them, mostly for being the first train I ever drew, travelled on and saw, all those years ago. But I understand, not everyone likes them.

And also, I would like to view the Tangaras as being a hybrid of an old 20th century train, but the beginning of a new era of rollingstock. So the T's are probably my 2nd favourite. Smile

They're a good train - no denying that - but their time has come.

I see them as a great leap forward; after all, when I was a child, all the trains were silvers except the 'new' Tangaras (and the Tullochs, I suppose - nightmare in the nineties). I'm sure you'll agree that getting them was a treat back then. I guess that's the personal reason why I clamour for Tangara general overhauls to get them to at least thirty-five years old.
  244hseriesalco Chief Train Controller

Well the S sets are not dead yet, not by a long shot.
Funny how they are getting cut up at Chullora, yet we over here at UGL Unipart Auburn are doing heavy overhauls.

By heavy im mean they are getting everything done, new body side fans, camshaft replaced, line switches replaced, pantograph replaced, over hauled bogies, new wheels, couplers buffer beams draft gear replaced, fluro tubes replaced, most of the light diffusers replaced, corrosion removed, half of the timber floor replaced, doors stripped and overhauled and painted, new door motors and door control gear, replacement of seats, mostly full interior repaint, all the brake gear replaced, master controller replaced, new drivers seats. Plus fixing any existing faults they may have , doing any outstanding Modifications such new guards door control buttons, and the wiper motors and the blades are replaced and most windows also.

Did the same situation happen with the single deck suburban cars, i.e. were they being scraped whilst some were getting overhauled?

Sets done to date are:
S139 3042 - 4105 - 4949 - 3030 HMC - Released last week
S75 3945 - 4094 - 4023 - 3968 FMC - Released this week
S51 3899 - 4107 - 4035 - 3765 FMC due out next week
S127 3001 - 4016 - 4167 - 3764 HMC due the week after next
S74 3071 - 4031 - 4138 - 3041 FMC due out 28th June

Also 10 sets have been agreed in the overhaul car plan for next year, but i dont have set or car numbers.
