What period did QRN hire EL's off CFCLA, and whats the likely-hood that a Yellow QRN X worked with one?

I would say that it was extremely unlikely.

The ELs were used at the very earliest period of the operation.

Also the two X class kept their green colours a bit longer than the two Gs.

The ELs stopped being used when QRN bought ARG in WA and I think the Xs were still green at that time.

There was a short period (maybe a year?) a couple of years back when QRN had a couple of ELs on hire for working between Adelaide and Melbourne post the ARG takeover - would have to check back through Catch Point mags to determine exactly when.

the el's also used to work through to perth on the mp1/pm1 services but i think it would be a couple of years since i have seen one here.

I won't outright dispute that the EL's were off-hired at the same time the CLF/P's came over to intermodal, as we all know there are often "one-off's" that can be used to prove/disprove almost anything, and I'm not here to start a fight. I do recall the EL's vanishing around the time the CLF/P's started appearing. Although I do recall a couple of movements with the two classes being used together, who's to say an EL wasn't simply hitching a ride on a QRN train to get from (say) Broadmeadow to Dynon for a new customer.

30/05/08, CLF4 led a CLP and an EL on BM7 south of Sydney, but as I said above, who's to say the EL wasn't simply hitching a ride?

2004 I photographed EL's on MB/BM7 services on the North Coast NSW line. So would have started 2004, maybe late 2003.

The first Sighting of EL's i got on MB/BM7 was EL54/57 on 10/8/2004. I think the service started maybe a week before this.

QR only had max 4-6 EL's at this time, but I did note GL108 leading an Up service on 30/10/04 as well as Interail L265 7/10/04

They continued running double and rarely triple EL's until the end of November 2004 until FA/PN's SM9 ceased and G516/534 and X53/54 were transferred to QR ownership.

I noted both G's with QR Badges on 7/12/04 on an Up service.

From there on they ran with any combo of EL/G/X until the end of 2005.

2006 added to the pool, de-leasing some EL's to Graincorp

QRN Livered 2819 (which i believe was the only QR livered loco to run with EL's) from march onwards.

Interail L265/L271, 42105/07/09, 42202/06 and 2208

Some RL's were delivered on Up Services as well!

CLF/P's started appering from around Sept-Oct 2006 therefore releasing the remaining EL's!

Thanks for the reminder.

There's a pic in the 2009 version of South Australian Diesel Pictorial of a pair of ELs going it alone on QRN's 7AP1 at Wirrappa - date 29 November 2008.

I think there were two distinct eras. ELs were leased to QRN for a period for the original Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane service pre-2006 and then sometime around 2008 they were leased for use on Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth services.

EDIT - Going back through past issues of Catch Point it would seem that the second era lasted from early 2007 through to about March/April 2009.

I dont believe the EL's ever ran with the eagle X classes.

The only locomotives ran with the eagle X classes that were not owned by QRN would be the SCT G class, CFCLA VL class and the odd GWA 22 class as well as EDi LDP class.

From my sighting of AP1/PA1 in Perth I noted EL's from 19/02/08 to 07/02/09. They nearly always worked in pairs, though I can quickly find the follow differences
19/02/02 - 3PA1 - EL60 & GM40
21/10/08 - 3PA1 - EL's 60, 63 & 58
19/02/03 - 7PA1 - EL61, G535

I then have G's and CL's from 10/03/09

That's mostly the same date range that I have.  My first sighting was on 27/11/07 and last sighting 10/02/09.  The first few weeks had triple ELs, then double was the norm.  Then there was a few glorious months of variety with CLP/CLF and G classes a few trains with the QR National livery CLPs - in fact my last sighting of an EL was EL60/CLP13/G511.  Then the 6000s invaded and quickly conquered with the occasional LDP / CLP / G to spice things up a bit.  I hear that one of the QR X classes has visited Perth at least once.

Its not a yellow X, but its an X. Taken on film, 3 EL's and an X, date is 05/08/05.

EL,X,EL date is 23/09/07.
