Interesting how there is no sign of the car that was involved in the incident. From the tweet, it would seem that the tram just decided to “go its own way”.It appears as though the car was (likely) turning right in front of the tram and the driver couldn't stop in time. Complete write-off; the occupants were very lucky not to have been more seriously hurt. From News.com.au:

Car tried to overtake the tram but hit the road profiler parked on the road side, bounced of it and hit the tram causing it to derail.Okay thanks - I was once on a Siemens travelling on route 6 and a small truck did the same thing - busting a gut to get in front of us, hit the front side of the tram and drove off. Pretty frightening, the driver came out and asked if everyone was okay before continuing on.
