A car managed to flip itself onto the outbound 75 tracks on Burwood Hwy between stops 68 and 69 at about 9:30 last night (I walked past the crash site as 9:52). As both track directions were closed for safety reasons, B2 2042 (from Vermont South) was stuck at stop 69. Outbound trams were terminating short at Middleborough Rd.

What is going on in Melbourne CBD to block the trams for so long?

Interesting how there is no sign of the car that was involved in the incident. From the tweet, it would seem that the tram just decided to “go its own way”.

I had to read until the last paragraph on the Murdoch press to find out the tram hit a car.

It appears as though the car was (likely) turning right in front of the tram and the driver couldn't stop in time. Complete write-off; the occupants were very lucky not to have been more seriously hurt. From News.com.au:

Car tried to overtake the tram but hit the road profiler parked on the road side, bounced of it and hit the tram causing it to derail.

Probably the most comprehensive feed I've seen of this

Okay thanks - I was once on a Siemens travelling on route 6 and a small truck did the same thing - busting a gut to get in front of us, hit the front side of the tram and drove off. Pretty frightening, the driver came out and asked if everyone was okay before continuing on.

And now The Age has a story about this tram having derailed three times (everyone of them due to a car or other road vehicle hitting it but that ruins a good headline, doesn't it) and how the RBTU reckon all of the C class should be put off the rails because they're dangerous and cause health issues for drivers and passengers.

As if Melbourne has so many trams lying around, just waiting in the wings, to replace 36 articulated trams.

The Montague Street Bridge hit back yesterday, claiming another truck after recently losing the limelight to Napier Street.
