Second amendment was probably appropriate when written and inserted. The most devastating weapon at the time, what a repeating rifle? Time and technology have moved on.
Joe average has no need for arsenal of ARs or AKs, yet some do.
But it is what it is, that will never ever change.

I can't vouch for the veracity of the figure but, I heard recently that there are 20 million assault rifles in private hands throughout the US of A which, if true, is frightening.  Nobody has yet grasped the fact that the huge number of guns in private hands has done nothing to prevent massacres for which the country is justly famous. The mindset seems to be that everyone else has guns, so I must also.

Fortunately there are checks and balances to stop the likes of Trump from literally taking over against the will of the people.
“This guy’s crazy,” Pelosi said of Trump in what the book reported was mostly a one-way phone call. “He’s dangerous. He’s a maniac.”

A couple of interesting books on the Trump Presidency hit the shelves this week. Obviously there's a lot of material from over the past 4 years.

Tonight, 4 Corners is blowing the lid on Murdoch and Fox News in a two part story on that incidious network of Trumpists and liars.

Last night's news showed Trump at a rally in Alabama bawling on about " . . . the second coming of President Donald J Trump".  The audience responded as one might have imagined, giving Trump an almighty back scratch and tummy tickle.

Did anybody else catch Trump's commentry of the Hollyfield - Belfort fight? It was pretty good, he certainly knows what he's talking about when it comes to the fight game.

With the fight over in under three minutes, nobody was over worked.
I'm interested to see billy's phraseology, "the fight game". I have great difficulty in using the terms game or sport where someone goes into a ring with the sole objective of belting another into unconsciousness.

Agreed, in todays far more enlightened times, this stuff belongs in the dark ages. What is it with blokes, testosterone and physical violence. Real Neanderthal stuff to me.

Boxing isn't as dangerous as rugby league or bull-riding. Every year, untold thousands of people die swimming. Boxers try to get points using finely honed techniques, not simply by turning the ring into a bloodbath. The true boxing fan disapproves of unnecessary violence.

But just think, billy, of all the pastimes you listed, boxing is the only one that consists of deliberate person to person violence and nothing else. The true boxing fan disapproves of unnecessary violence?  Boxing is violence; punching someone is violence no matter how you try to dress it up.

From the day of birth to our day of death, life is violence. People have an irrepressible desire to view and participate in violence, be it physical or by Shakespeare's pen. When wars stop, you can tell me otherwise. Boxing is simply a way to enrapture this desire and present it in a controlled form, with all professionals nearby in case of an outburst. Rugby league, for example, tries to dress this up, and present the obvious blood lust as some weird athletic skill, kicking, throwing balls, zig zag running and so on. At least boxing is honest, these other sports are pretending their nobility.

Yes, well, one person's violence is another's justified resistance. There was a lot of violence in Stalingrad almost 80 years ago and in my book, a lot of it was justified. The behaviour of the men of the Stalingrad Tractor Factory, brave resistance certainly, and Vasily Zaitsev? A murderous violent thug in your book? These boxer men, they train for this, they know what's going on and you are welcome not to watch. Do they come to your kitchen and complain about you eating meat?

Billy; my point is about boxing. The violence of war is something else and invasion must be resisted. Nobody justifies war.

These boxer men, they train for this, they know what's going on and you are welcome not to watch.
billybaxter
We know that, we know it's legal, we know they train, and I don't watch. But, nothing will alter the fact that this is gratuitous and unnecessary violence where people try to beat others up. If they did it in the street they'd be arrested. Sport? No way.

Do they come to your kitchen and complain about you eating meat?

Extraordinary allegations regarding General Milley and his conversations with China last year:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/09/14/gen-mark-milley-worried-trump-could-launch-nuclear-attack/8334915002/

One could argue that warning China of an impending military attack by the USA would be an act of treason by General Milley.  Who also completely stuffed up Afghanistan....

Governor Newsome in California's recall election absolutely trounced Trumpist opponent Larry Elder.

This was the first opportunity for the electorate to vote against lunatic Trumpism, therefore the GoP could be in real trouble next year.

No lover of Gavin Newsom. He has mismanaged California, big time. But I am glad that Uncle ... Larry Elder lost.
