  Sonofagunzel Chief Commissioner

The original clue was:

Intensify celebrity obsession?

Here is the same clue (same answer, same method of solving) written a different way:

Further fanatical fandom?

Will let you all have a think about that for 24 hours and then give some further hints if necessary.

Oh dear, I have a sneaking suspicion this place is closer to Brisbane.than it is to Sydney. Please tell me I'm wrong!

(No, this is not a new puzzle. It's a contribution to the current one!)

Nope - Sydney suburban.

Another hint: you need to know a word that was born about 20 years ago, that fell into common usage about 5 years ago.

Perhaps I'm just a 'confused storeman' (think about it) bit I won't STAND for any MORE of these daft contrived nonsenses.

Sorry, but I'm done with this (again).

Stanmore?
  Sonofagunzel Chief Commissioner

Stanmore it is!

For others who may not know:

Stan is a song released by Eminem and Dido about 20 years ago, about an obsessive and disturbed fan. The name is probably a combination of “stalker” and “fan”.

It then became a word used in social media to describe obsessive fans, used both as a noun and a verb.

It was then adopted as the brand name of a well-known video streaming subscription service.

So a Stan is someone who obsesses about a celebrity or is a fanatical fan, and they are said to Stan that celebrity.

So if the intensify that obsession, or take it further, they Stan more.

Take it away, Sydneyshortnorth!

I got it, Valvegear, by googling "fandom" names.  And sure enough I found a whole table of such 'fandom" names.  Unfortunately, I was beaten to the answer.

I do think that the celebrity status and wealth of some of these "rappers" is undeserved, on the basis of their purveying noise pollution in the guise of music.  But I couldn't find anything on the "fandom" of the opera!

Even if you didn't find the fandom, you put up a Commendatorial effort, matched only by Mr Giovanni who didn't want to find him anyway.

Thank you, though for what it's worth, my response wasn't really intended to claim the prized relay baton. It was more a p*ss-take of your obscure clue which relied entirely on specialist limited knowledge of Millennial yoof culture for its resolution (credit Professor Google). Fortunately I have tried to keep up over the years though it still wasn't my kind of "cryptic word game".

And are you actually famiiar with the lyrics of the song "Stan?"

Now, since you have passed me the block key, thank you again, here is a rather more traditional cryptic for you to crack:

"Hear the sound of two fishes when tea is cleared away and Elle arrives".

Blacktown?

Blacktown - T + L = Blacklown = sounds like “black, clown”, which are both types of fish?

"TomBTR"
Immediately before Matthew's post, sydneyshortnorth posted "Perhaps I'm just a 'confused storeman' (think about it) bit I won't STAND for any MORE of these daft contrived nonsenses." I think that showed that he had solved it, and he was 9 minutes ahead of Matthew.

Telopea?

Telopea is no longer an active, open station so it can't be the answer.

Out of interest though, how did you get there from the clue?

Not Kirrawee. Why/how?

Just to be sure you're pitching for the right puzzle, here it is again:

"Hear the sound of two fishes when tea is cleared away and Elle arrives"

No hints, but some advice:

It's a properly cryptic puzzle. All you need to solve it are a careful reading of the words of the clue, a list of currently active Sydney Trains electrified network stations and some of your own lateral (not literal) thinking. No specialist, historical or local knowledge required.

Well done, you got there.

Martin/Marlin (clear out "tea" and bring in "Elle") Place/Plaice (a flatfish, nice with chips!).

When cryptic clues contain "hook" phrases like "Hear the ...", "Sounds like ...." etc it's always good to read the clue out loud and listen to yourself.  Same when considering possible answers.  The spelling of the answer's word or words might be different but it's the sound you're chasing.

Clear road in the tunnel for Faredodger.

Thanks, Steve.  An excellent clue.

Sorry, folks, but I'm somewhat preoccupied at the moment on account of a death in the family and I can't come up with a clue worthy of your intellects, nor be on hand to monitor the answers.  So I'm declaring an open forum.
