Rail for the Alice Springs to Darwin railway (constructed between 2001-4) was manufactured at the OneSteel plant at Whyalla in South Australia and then moved north to Alice Springs by rail. Here it was transferred by road to the railhead construction sites at Tennant Creek and Katherine.
In July 2003, the penultimate load of rails is seen in typical outback scenery near Wirrappa, some 160 kms north of Port Augusta
