The first of the 11 members of the class, all of them equipped with Alco 251CE V-12 engines developing 1,790 kW (2,400 hp) for traction purposes, entered service with Westrail in 1977.
Between July 1982 and June 1983, the first four members of the class, nos 1871 to 1874, had their vacuum brake equipment replaced with Westinghouse air brake systems, and were redesignated as the NA class.
In 1995, two of the NA class members (nos 1872 and 1873) were converted to standard gauge using bogies from scrapped Pilbara Alco locomotives, and redesignated as NB class. They are now in service with El Zorro and known as the "18" class.
Subsequently NA1874 was purchased by Austrac in 1997, sold to South Spur Rail in 2001. Converted to 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1?2 in) in 2006, it retains the identification of NA1874. It is listed in this database as "NA1874s" to allow the internal data links to work properly. This is peculiar to the database and does not reflect Operator practice.
