Firefighters believe sparks from a train may be responsible for a number of fires in scrubland in Perth's eastern suburbs.
Emergency services began receiving calls about a fire on Railway Parade in Middle Swan about an hour ago.
More than 150 firefighters working through the night saved 30 houses from a bushfire which is still out of control and threatening homes at Shady Hills and west of Walyunga National National Park.
Reinforcements are being brought in from the South West and Geraldton and more than 270 firefighters will battle the blaze that has burned through about 1200 hectares..
SACRAMENTO -- Nearly five years after Peninsula towns first sued to block California's high-speed train from coming up the Caltrain corridor, a judge has finally dismissed the case in a long-awaited victory for bullet train backers.
The ruling released Thursday means the state finally proved that it was legally correct in December 2007 when it decided to send its planned $69 billion high-speed rail network up the Pacheco Pass from the Central Valley, zipping bullet trains from San Jose to San Francisco. An alternative plan that environmentalists and some Peninsula cities preferred would have sent the trains up a longer East Bay route through the Altamont Pass.
It gives the California High-Speed Rail Authority a sigh of relief as it heads toward a groundbreaking on the controversial project in the Central Valley as soon as July.
MARION Council will seek 20,000 signatures for a petition calling on the State Government to fund the $110 million overpass at Oaklands Park rail crossing.
Marion Mayor Felicity-ann Lewis said the community demanded a solution to the traffic problems but the council needed strong support from residents and businesses for the project to get off the ground.
"A petition with 20,000 signatures will be a strong signal that this infrastructure desperately needs to be funded to end the traffic congestion at Oaklands Crossing," Ms Lewis said.

A NEW coal dust monitoring program along the southeast urban rail corridor will not accurately measure the effect of accumulated exposure on nearby residents, experts say.
A leading environmental doctor and an air quality expert yesterday questioned the value of the testing, which will monitor coal dust emissions over a 24-hour period, potentially diluting the results of spikes in coal dust when a train passes.
The monitoring program, announced by the Queensland Resources Council on Wednesday, also will not test for accumulated coal dust on houses close to train lines.

THE West Australian Labor Party's election pledge to expand Perth's rail network has been costed at $5.2 billion by the state's Treasury in a blow to Opposition Leader Mark McGowan, who said it would cost taxpayers $3.8bn.

A GOVERNMENT study has found a rail link to Melbourne's outer southeastern suburb of Rowville is possible, but will be at least a decade away.
The Victorian government released the final stage one report for the Rowville rail line feasibility project on Tuesday, which envisaged that 68,000 people would use the line daily by 2046.
While the study found the Rowville line is feasible, upgrades will be required on the Dandenong line and the Melbourne Metro underground rail tunnel will need to be built.
Rail will capture more of the long-distance logistics work in Australia, according to Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) CEO John Fullerton.
Fullerton last week told the Victorian Transport Association (VTA), rail reight’s transformation into a modern, commercially-orientated industry over the past two decades will see it more determined to win market share from other modes, particularly road.
“What we have today is a rail freight industry that has never been stronger,” Fullerton says.
“Industry participants such as Asciano, Aurizon, SCT Logistics and Qube are strong, they have commercial resilience and they have investment capacity.”
Fullerton says such companies are all successful, high performing enterprises with longevity and a depth of experience making the industry much more commercially and operationally mature.
OPPONENTS of the idea of an east coast high-speed rail link between Brisbane and Melbourne argue, quite rightly, that Australia’s small population will make it hard for a project like that to make money.
The small market, coupled with the expense of acquiring a rail corridor and building through some of the tougher terrain – like the Hawkesbury sandstone belt, for example – definitely makes the equation challenging.

Three men were crushed to death and another was injured when a pile of steel beams fell on them in the railway car where they were sleeping, Alabama authorities said on Tuesday.
A fifth man escaped harm and summoned help, Mobile Fire-Rescue spokesman Steve Huffman said.
Mobile police said the men were believed to be transients in their 20s and had been sleeping in an open car, two on top of the beams and three below, when the accident occurred early Tuesday morning at the CSX rail yard.
The beams weigh at least several hundred pounds each, and it was unclear how many were stacked in the car.
"It's pretty heavy stuff," Huffman said, adding that the car was being readied to move when the load of beams apparently shifted and fell.
THE Greens have accused Labor of "crab-walking away" from high-speed rail after Anthony Albanese claimed the project would be too noisy.

Myki machines at suburban railway stations have been damaged in an apparent attempt to steal cash, sparking a police investigation. The damaged machines cannot accept notes, forcing passengers at those stations to top up with credit cards or coins or search for the nearest myki retailer. Fairfax Media has seen multiple vandalised machines unable to take notes at unstaffed stations along the Upfield line. Public Transport Victoria did not reveal how many machines have been damaged, saying the matter was "subject to police investigation". "A number of myki machines at train stations have been vandalised resulting in the machine being unable to accept notes," a spokesman said.
THE consortium that holds the contract for the $1.2 billion first stage of the Gold Coast's light rail system, GoldLinQ, has offered to cover most of the cost of the second stage to link it to the heavy rail network. IT has emerged that GoldLinQ's offer to extend the light rail stretches further than originally thought -- with plans under way to also take trams south.
The company this week said it was willing to cover the capital cost of connecting with the heavy rail system north of the original design -- if its operational contract was extended from 15 to 28 years.
Gold Coast business leader John Howe said GoldLinQ would not only build the second stage of the light rail from Griffith University to a new station at Parkwood, but would also extend the line at the other end from Broadbeach to Nobby Beach if their contract proposal was accepted.

The train disruption occurred after a young man, believed to be about 25, fell two metres over the edge of the Batman Avenue bridge. The man fell onto a ledge attached to the bridge, rather than onto the railway lines many metres below.

A TRAIN line to Melbourne Airport would run from the proposed Metro rail tunnel via Albion East, the State Government says.
The route was not necessarily the quickest - it would take an estimated 30 minutes to travel from the airport to the Metro's proposed CBD North station.

A BRISBANE passenger train crashed into a train station because the tracks were slippery, an investigation has found.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau found contaminants - such as wet leaves, wood, rust, oil or lubricants - were on the tracks and that affected the train's ability to brake.
"The braking effectiveness of T842 was reduced ... and the train was unable to stop before hitting the end-of-line buffer stop," the ATSB's preliminary report said.

A TRAIN along the Eastern Freeway has been identified as the best rail route to Doncaster, with a new underground line from Northcote to the city integral to the plan.
A long-awaited feasibility study into a Doncaster link has pinpointed a preferred route to start at Doncaster Park and Ride, run along and under the freeway with stations at Bulleen and Kew and connect with the existing rail network at Victoria Park station in Collingwood.
It would then go through stations in Richmond, on to Flinders St and through the City Loop.
The solution would also need the South Morang line to be underground from about Northcote. It would travel via new stations at Merri, Clifton Hill, Fitzroy and Parkville in the proposed Melbourne Metro tunnel, before ending at a new Flagstaff Gardens station.
More detail has been given of a plan for a permanent rail station at Wayville in Adelaide's inner south.
It is planned to spend $16.5 million to upgrade the temporary train station for permanent use.
The stop has been used in the past during the Royal Adelaide Show.
THE $160 million Griffith Health Centre will need to be shifted if plans to link the city's light rail system to a new station at Parkwood go ahead, says a Gold Coast MP.
Alex Douglas, the Member for Gaven, said the building, which is under construction on the corner of Parklands Drive and Olsen Avenue, was standing in the way of the preferred route for the light rail system.
The proposed route would allow the light rail project to go ahead sooner and to be built at a much lower cost than the original plan to run from Parklands to Helensvale at a cost of between $800 million and $1 billion.
Mr Douglas said the health centre was in the wrong place and might need to be knocked down.
[Jakarta train] operator PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) is set to launch an electronic ticketing system by the end of April.
KCJ spokeswoman Eva Chairunisa said on Monday that the company was currently in the last phase of preparations before activating the system for all 600 stations in Greater Jakarta, which will cover the Bogor-Kota, Jakarta Ring, Tanah Abang-Parungpanjang, Duri-Tangerang and Bekasi-Kota routes.
Giant trucks more than 36 metres long will be let loose on more Victorian roads under a Napthine government plan to move more freight across the state.
The government wants to see 36.5-metre road trains and B-triples on more regional roads, and expand the routes that longer B-doubles can use around Melbourne, in a bid to transport freight more productively.

A SOUTHERN Grampians Shire councillor has called for Hamilton to be reconnected to passenger rail.
Cr Katrina Rainsford said the city was “flatlining” and needed to be better linked to the rest of the state.
Hamilton is one of few major Victorian towns, including Portland and Mildura, that do not have a passenger rail line.

A GISBORNE student who uses public transport to get to university in St Albans says V/Line trains don't run on time or match up with the Metro train timetable. Gemma Elliott, 18, started university this year and relies on public transport. She catches an 8.41am train from Gisborne that is meant to arrive in Sunbury at 8.58am but is often late. The connecting Metro service is at 9.02am. After this service, the next train to St Albans from Sunbury is at 9.40am. Gemma said that last Tuesday the 8.41am V/Line train from Bendigo to Gisborne was late and she missed the 9.02am connection at Sunbury.
Major delays are expected on the Belgrave line this morning after a train hit a car at Tecoma, in Melbourne's east. Passengers on the train escaped injury when the train collided with a car near the Glenfern overpass at Upwey just before 5:00am (AEDT).
Freight rail operator Aurizon has won a coal haulage contract in Queensland with mining giant Xstrata.
Aurizon has won the right to haul coal from Xstrata’s expanded Rolleston mine, where production is expected to increase by more than five million tonnes of coal a year to 14.6 million tonnes from late 2014.
ANALYSIS It has taken just two years for the state government's grand plans to expand Melbourne's suburban rail network to vanish down a hole. Or rather, a tunnel. After ambitiously launching studies on long-proposed railway lines to Doncaster, Rowville and Melbourne Airport in its early days, the Coalition government has in the past week dropped three separate independent reports that all reach the same conclusion: nothing will be built before Melbourne Metro. Melbourne Metro – a proposed nine-kilometre rail tunnel beneath the city centre – is at least a decade away from happening but heads the government's wishlist of public transport projects and, perhaps more significantly, of the bureaucracy that advises them. The Transport Department and its successor, Public Transport Victoria, were never interested in the Coalition's vision of new suburban rail extensions because they had already looked at these projects years ago and found reasons not to go ahead with them. Evidently they won the argument behind closed doors, because the government has rushed to release its reports, as if to purge itself of the embarrassing baggage of its pre-election optimism.
The state government has confirmed it will sell half its stake in rail freight business Aurizon, formerly known as QR National, in a deal worth $806 million.
Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the proceeds from the sale would be used to pay down state debt.
The Queensland government sold off $1.5 billion worth of QR National shares, reducing its stake from 34 per cent to 16 per cent, only five months ago.
Mr Nicholls said at the time that there were no ''current intentions'' to sell any of the remaining shares in the ''near term''.

Coaches will replace the two Albury midday trains from Tuesday 2 April to allow the Australian Rail Track Corporation to accelerate its track repair program. The two trains, the 12:00 Southern Cross to Albury, and the 12:45 Albury to Southern Cross, will run as coaches the entire trip to reduce inconvenience for passengers. Trains will return on Sunday 30 June, 2013.V/Line Acting Chief Executive Officer Ross Pedley said the decision to replace the two trains with coaches followed discussion with the ARTC and Public Transport Victoria.

Dungog councillor Linda Bowden will move a motion at tonight’s council meeting to urge the state government to reverse its decision to cut the railway line into Newcastle at Wickham.
Ms Bowden said outlying councils such as Dungog, whose residents relied on the service, had not been consulted before the decision was announced.

Monash University students and staff are calling enhancements to Huntingdale Station so that buses 601 and 630 can be boarded without stepping out of Huntingdale Station.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) says Queensland Rail has agreed to improve 'wheel adhesion' on the type of commuter train involved in an accident on Brisbane's bayside.
A report released earlier this month found "wheel slide" was the likely cause of an accident that saw a train plough into Cleveland Station in January.

Five new bus services into the Williams Landing railway station may do little to relieve the traffic choking Melbourne's western suburbs because buses will not meet every train, according to public transport advocates.
Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder announced the new Williams Landing station, on the Werribee line, would open on April 28, and that five new bus routes would service the station.
Three of the routes will be new services to Point Cook South and Saltwater Coast and the other two will be established routes with some changes.

CITY train services will be disrupted over the Easter weekend, with the Fremantle line and Perth Underground Station shut. The Fremantle line will be closed from 8pm today (Thursday) with operations returning to normal from the start of services on Tuesday, April 2. Victoria's public transport managing body says a $30 billion plan to upgrade Melbourne's metro rail network is the most comprehensive in more than 40 years. Public Transport Victoria says the blueprint, revealed today, is set to move an extra 50,000 people during peak times within 10 years and an extra 130,000 within 20 years.
A new $43 million bridge will be built across Homebush Bay to connect Rhodes to Wentworth Point. The NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure has approved construction of the 300-metre concrete bridge to provide residents with easier access to public transport and other amenities.
