A fire on a freight train has closed central Victoria's main railway line.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) says a locomotive caught fire near Castlemaine about 3:30am (AEDT).
No-one was hurt.
The CFA's Bruce Quarrier says the fire started just as the train was entering a tunnel.
"Luckily, the train driver actually backed the train out of the tunnel so they could get easier access to it," he said.
He says the fire was burning in and around the engine, which was still running.
"Being an electrical generator, the biggest trouble the crews had was getting the locomotive engine shut down."
Buses are ferrying passengers between Bendigo and Melbourne.
