The Eastern Suburbs, Illawarra and South Coast railway lines are closed partially between Sutherland and Waterfall because of a freight train breakdown at Loftus.
Buses are being organised as a replacement service between Sutherland and Waterfall.
Passengers travelling to stations beyond Waterfall are advised to delay their journey until the bus service begins.
Passengers can use their train tickets to travel on Veolia bus services between Sutherland and Heathcote.
Passengers travelling towards the city on both lines are advised to allow additional travel time.
