The campaign to restore the Bendigo – Castlemaine –Maryborough – Ballarat – Geelong rail link and the increasing the number of passenger services to Maryborough moves up a notch with the second of a number of rallies to be arranged this year in key locations.
The Napthine Government has stated that there are no funds available to fund the restoration of this important rail link between the regional centres, which are experiencing unprecedented growth in population and construction. The Napthine Government’s ‘gold plating’ the costing of $900 million in the feasibility study into the Revival of the Geelong – Ballarat – Bendigo rail link must be seen as a means to get the Minister for Regional Development, Peter Ryan off the hook for his mendacious announcements proposing the restoration of the Regional Rail Link at the last election in 2012.
An independent engineering assessment of the projectcosted the Regional Rail Link as less than $90 million to completely restore to operational capacity.
Yet, the Napthine Government can find $2.5 billion dollars to fund the Pakenham line upgrade and $300 million in corporate welfare to keep Lindsay Fox’s Avalon Airport open.
These funds would be of greater benefit to country communities along the Regional Rail Link corridor to improve the community’s mobility, access to medical care, employment, tourism, education and training and freight transportation.
The restoration and opening of the rail link would enable the Victorian Goldfield’s Railway to increase their range of operations and this would flow onto increasing the tourism in the region.
Country communities are fed up with city centric politicians with their vacuous platitudes, promises and policies. The Nation Party, has throughout the campaign for the Regional Rail Link remained a deafly silence and this gives the direct impression that they have politically abandoned country people and show a high level of complacency with regard to securing the country vote.
Country roads are deteriating as a result the increase in freight being transported by B Doubles and semi trailer trucks and this needs to be rectified with intermodal freight centres connected by rail. The deteriation of the roads and increase in truck transport, have a direct effect and impact on the safety of country people on the roads.
Country communities have a greater vision for their community, than the politicians who exhibit arrogance that they know what is best for country people and resort to window dressing consultations, to give the impression that they, through their staged media events, are showing effective leadership and are spuriously well informed.
There is strong evidence, that when the rail service is taken out of a community, the economy of the town goes back wards and this has happened across Victoria since the 1950s and it is time politicians were brought to account.
The Regional Rail Link is an imperative that will bring considerable tangible benefit to the six regions that it passes through economically, socially, creatively and commercially as well as to the state of Victoria.
