A NEW train station in the Artarmon industrial area emerged as a possibility last week under the State Government’s $10 to $11 billion extension of the North West Rail Link across Sydney Harbour to Bankstown.
New plans for the project, which was rebadged from Sydney Rapid Transit to the more “customer-friendly name” Sydney Metro, show a new station at Artarmon, which could create a new transport interchange for bus services on the Gore Hill Freeway and increase opportunities for “commercial, mixed use and higher density residential apartments”.
Sydney Metro will link up to the North West Rail Link at Chatswood and stop at five new stations, including one at either Crows Nest or St Leonards.
The project will add new stations at Victoria Cross in North Sydney, Martin Place, Pitt St and Central. It will also convert the Bankstown Line to a metro line.
NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said tunnelling would start by 2017 and the project would be finished by 2024 with capacity to run a metro train every two minutes each way to the centre of Sydney.
“We are going to see, I think, a revolution in terms of public transport. This is the game changer,” Mr Constance said.
“We will end up with two rail networks, meaning long-term detriment to reliability, flexibility and certainly interoperability,” Mr Donovan said.
“Passengers will soon realise that one network is better than two.”
Opal tickets and fares will be the same as the rest of the network and the project promises continuous mobile phone coverage on the trains and travel-time savings from Central to Chatswood of “around” 10 minutes.
