It was great to see Frank Cherry's comment in the June edition of Railway Digest on the intransigence of governments to recognise the enormous benefits of rail freight over the road transport of freight.
However, 1 freight train will actually remove 110 trucks from the road, which would be a massive benefit to the economy and economic development of the states and the entire country.
Regrettably, politicians both federally and state are the prisoners of the road transport industry through their political donations, advocacy and lobbying
The heading in the June edition of Railway Digest - Minister Keen to discuss extra Ararat trains. The Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan, certainly knows how to inflame the situation by pouring fuel on the fire for the people of Maryborough who want an increase in the number of trains to their city.
Maryborough is a city the same size as Ararat, yet Ararat has 3 times the number of services.
There have been some changes to the times for the local train to leave Maryborough in the morning and arrive back in the evening. As from June 19th the weekday the train will leave Maryborough at 7:12am and arrives at Southern Cross at 9:40am. It leave Southern Cross at 4:33pm and gets into Maryborough at 6:39pm It is very nice to be able to Melbourne a bit earlier than before but it is in fact seven minutes slower than the current timetable! The return journey is in fact seven minutes faster than previously. It takes 2 hours and 28 minutes to go to Melbourne in the morning yet it only takes 2 hours and 7 minutes to get home.
Even with the very limited resources given to Maryborough, there are situations where there are V/Line services competing with each other. Friday is particularly bad where there are three Maryborough bound services leaving within half an hour of each other from Southern Cross Station. These services should be spread more evenly throughout the day where at times it requires a wait of five hours between services.
It is still not possible to catch any form of public transport into Maryborough of a Sunday morning. Ararat has five services each way of a Sunday including two trains each way.
You have to start considering the motives of Jacinta Allan, considering that both Ararat and Maryborough are in the seat of Ripon, which at the last election went from Labor to the Liberal party and Daniel McGlone the Labor candidate was hung out to dry by the Labor party machine. The incumbent, Louise Staley is yet to prove her worth for the electorate.
