The Greens' candidate for the Gippsland by-election, Malcolm McKelvie, has called on the Federal Government to invest more in public transport.
Dr McKelvie says the Government's 5 per cent allocation of its budget for public transport is evidence it is not serious about easing the pressure on families.
He says the Government should have had fuel efficiency measures in place long ago to combat an expected rise in oil prices.
Dr McKelvie says the Government needs to fund more public transport services for Gippsland to give residents an alternative.
"We are calling on very stringent fuel efficiency standards, we think that we ought to be moving the budget for road funding, into rail funding," he said.
"So if we've got the money to double the highway between Traralgon and Sale, surely we've got the money to double the frequency of trains, say, between Bairnsdale and Pakenham."
