A 50 minute train trip to Melbourne is about to become a reality for Geelong locals.
The Herald Sun and The Age are reporting Premier Daniel Andrews will announce on Saturday that the state government will match the federal government's $2 billion commitment for the fast rail project in Tuesday's state budget.
Under the first stage, 12km of new track will be laid between Werribee and Laverton, and Geelong trains will run through Werribee and Newport instead of Wyndham Vale, cutting 8km off the existing route and 23 minutes off commuter times.
But some services will continue to run through the current route, giving those in Geelong access to the airport rail connection at Sunshine.
Future upgrades to the project also aim to further cut travel time down to 40 minutes.
Construction of the $4 billion project is set to begin in 2023.
