The developer behind plans to build a new rail freight terminal in Casino says the infrastructure will play a viral role in the future of the region's plantation forest industry.
John McMahon is expected to lodge a development application for the 10-million-dollar project with the Richmond Valley Council this week.
He says a plantation industry running at full capacity has the potential to put an extra thousand trucks a week on local roads, making a rail alternative essential.
"The road between Casino to Bangalow is a pretty ordinary road as it is and there's already a huge bottleneck once you get up to the Gateway Bridge going into the port of Brisbane," Mr McMahon said.
"You suddenly start getting an extra 200 trucks a day going on that road through Lismore and through to Bangalow and it's just going to be a nightmare," he said.
