Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
Labor's duty MLC for Ballina and Tweed says deliberate mischief is being spread about the State Government's rail trails legislation.
Protesters gathered in Murwillumbah this morning to campaign against the bill, which they fear could see the Casino-to-Murwillumbah corridor sold to developers.
Amanda Fazio says that sale was never on the agenda.
She says she can understand if people are sceptical of assurances about public consultation.
"Particularly because there were guarantees given that nothing would happen to local rail services for a set period of time and then decisions were made within that timeframe," Ms Fazio said.
"So I can understand their scepticism but I think if people actually have a close look at what's being put forward in the rail trails legislation they would see that it's definitely not an attempted land grab," she said.
But Trains On Our Tracks spokeswoman Karin Kolbe says the bill would allow the sale of the disused north coast line with only 30 days notice.
Ms Kolbe says other rail lines across NSW could also be sold if the proposal becomes law later this month.
She says communities from around the state are joining forces to oppose the legislation.
"It's a very badly-named act because really it has nothing to do with rail trails and it has everything to do with the State Government selling the land that's currently used by railway lines and railway stations," Ms Kolbe said.
"It's all about selling land, it's not about rail trails at all, so it's not about transport it's about money," she said.
