Closure of Newcastle rail stations not technically a closure of whole line, State Government lawyer says
The Hunter Business Chamber says a fast train link between Newcastle and Sydney is unlikely to get off the ground because it is too costly.
Newcastle MP Sharon Grierson wants the decade-old plan to be put back on the planning agenda.
Chamber CEO Peter Shinnick says even if the project meets the new Commonwealth infrastructure funding critera, it is non-viable.
"The practicalities are that with a project which is going to cost in excess of $20 billion, it's just not viable," he said.
"There are so many other priorities for the construction of transport infrastructure in NSW and in fact around Australia, that a fast train to Sydney sits well down that priority list."
