DELAYS have surged to over an hour for some rail lines in the state's west tonight.
Trains on Metro's Williamstown, Werribee and the V-Line Geelong corridor have been delayed up to an hour.
A Metro spokeswoman advised passengers avoid travelling on these lines and suggested footy fans using them to seek alternative travel arrangements to arrive in time for the clash between Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.
Crowds of angry commuters are building at Flinders St station as they try to get out of the city and additional staff have been brought in to assist passengers.
An earlier surge at a signal box is still being worked on by authorities and is causing the delays.
The Sydenham line is operating as normal again.
Buses have been ordered to run between Williamstown and Newport.
