The Western Australian Government has awarded a $36 million contract for METRONET tracklaying work at Claremont Station.
The contract has been awarded to John Holland and is expected to create 300 jobs.
The work will involve providing track, civil and electrical works and installation of an underpass on the Claremont Station METRONET project, most notably on the turnbacks, due to be installed at the station in early 2021.
These turnbacks will allow trains to head back the way they came after passengers disembark at Claremont Station, enabling a high frequency of service to meet long-term passenger demands on both the Fremantle and Forrestfield-Airport Link lines.
Western Australian Transport Minister, Rita Saffioti, said, “This $36 million contract will help support 300 local jobs in the community, an excellent outcome for the project.
“We know significant development is taking place around Claremont Station – which is currently the third-busiest on the Fremantle Line – and we expect patronage of this station to increase significantly, which is why this upgrade is so important.
“Claremont Station is located halfway along the Fremantle Line, so is ideally positioned to host turnbacks – it’s a vital part of ensuring our rail network is well-placed to deal with future demand particularly when the Forrestfield-Airport Link comes online in late 2021.”
Turnback One, between Claremont Station and Stirling Road, will be used every ten minutes during peak as part of the normal rail operations.
Turnback Two, between Swanbourne Station and Stirling Road, will be used during peak periods and special events, or to assist operations if there is a planned or unplanned service disruption.
As well as installation of turnbacks, the Claremont Station project will involve refurbishment of station facilities to improve accessibility, an expansion of bus facilities west of the station on Gugeri Street, removal of the western pedestrian level crossing and realignment of Principal Shared Path sections.
Works are expected to be complete in late 2021.
