The low-floor Flexity LRVs for TTC are five-section, uni-directional vehicles with all-wheel drive. Based on light rail technology, they are modified to TTC specifications and the special requirements of the city’s streetcar network. They are due to enter service from 2023.
To date some 204 streetcars have been delivered to the TTC, and these extra 60 will help maintain jobs and expertise at Alstom’s site in Thunder Bay, Ontario, where previous streetcars were assembled and tested for the TTC.
The streetcar project will be supported by Alstom sites in St-Bruno and La Pocatière, Quebec, which will provide project management and certain component sub-assembly, respectively. The manufacturer said this will allow it to maintain 400 jobs at the Thunder Bay and La Pocatière sites.
Funding for the additional street cars was confirmed last month.
