The B.S.L. Infra consortium has secured the contract for the construction of the Rail Baltica station and its associated infrastructure at Latvia’s Riga Airport.
The consortium, which includes Austrian company Swietelsky AG and Latvian construction companies SIA Binders and AS LNK Industries, was awarded the contract after winning the international tender.
Construction works are expected to begin in May and will be executed in five stages until December 2025.
The first stage of work is expected to be completed in March or April 2023.
This stage will witness the construction of the Rail Baltica railway infrastructure from Imanta railway station to Riga International Airport, as well as the station terminal.
The new station building will have three levels, where the first floor or ground level will provide entry to the station and airport complex.
The second level will feature a spacious lounge area, waiting rooms, information stands, ticket vending machines and ticket offices, whereas the third floor will provide stoppage to the high-speed train and shuttle from the centre of Riga.
As part of the next stage of work, the facade of the station building will be created, along with the mechanical systems, interior decoration and other improvements.
The construction of an overpass to Riga and Jaunmarupe will subsequently be carried out.
Rail Baltica tracks and the station will be located on the railway overpass, at a height of about 10m, allowing the railway to accommodate less space.
A 113m-long railway crossing over K. Ulmaņa gatve and an embankment will also be constructed.
The railway track construction will take place in the final stage, where two railway tracks will be laid for Rail Baltica high-speed train to operate four times a day and a shuttle train every 30 minutes.
This line will enable passengers to reach the centre of Riga from the airport in eight minutes.
The total amount of the contract is €236.9m ($286.4m), excluding VAT.
The construction will be based on the project by the open international tender winner, which is a consortium from three countries, PROSIV (Syntagma) from Italy, Prodex from Slovakia and Vector T from Latvia.
In 2018, Eiropas Dzelzcela līnijas, which is the project’s implementer in Latvia, awarded €4.5m ($5.4m) Rail Baltica contract for design, and supervision and construction to a consortium of three firms, namely Syntagma, Prodex and Vector T.
