When the Union Pacific Railroad announced in early 2022 that they would be postponing Big Boy #4014’s extensive tour to focus on ‘network upgrades’, it was a major disappointment for many railfans, including us here at Steam Giants.
Even though she may not be adventuring on a national tour, Union Pacific is firing up the locomotive for a special excursion/exhibition this weekend. We know that many enjoy tracking the massive steamer when she operates, and now there is another tracker available for free!

Where is the Big Boy #4014 going?
In preparation for the Union Pacific Museum’s largest fundraising event of the year, the Big Boy will be traveling from the UP’s shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Union Station in Denver, Colorado, on Thursday, July 28th. The locomotive will be on display in Denver on Friday before returning to Wyoming on Saturday leading the Union Pacific Museum fundraising excursion .
During her runs between Denver and Cheyenne, the locomotive will make brief stops for appearances in Greenley, Colorado. #4014 will also make a brief appearance at the Cheyenne Depot Museum before returning to the shops.
How Can I Track Big Boy #4014?
The Union Pacific has a tracker available for the locomotive, but some have found it difficult to use in the past. Fortunately, there is a new tracker being introduced for the #4014’s runs this weekend.
RailGiantsTracker, operated by Mile High Drone Services, will be following the Big Boy’s journey and you can join. Owner Dave Burritt indicated that functionality was key since cell service may be limited in some areas. Burritt said that the new tracker ‘allows you to get basic information very quickly and not used the bandwidth or take the time to view the map. Many times the UP tracker does not work when one is in the middle of nowhere with limited service.’

Also along for the ride
On the train will be UP’s museum car and multimedia car. Cars pulled by #4014 will be railroad’s restored, matching, set of Yellow and Armour Grey coaches and dome cars. It’s an impressive sight!
