The Victorian Government announced today the first service on the 828-kilometre route will depart from Adelaide on January 3.
The future of the 133-year-old train service has been in grave doubt after Steven Marshall withdrew all government funding in 2018. The service had previously received a mix of funding from the SA and Victorian governments.
SA Labor immediately launched a community campaign to save The Overland:
[table][tr][td][table][tr][td]n July this year, the Victorian Government announced it would enter into a three-year agreement with operator Journey Beyond to pay for South Australia’s share of funding to ensure the train’s ongoing operation.
The service is used by 20-30,000 people each year and provides a vital transport link for communities in regional South Australia including Murray Bridge and Bordertown.
It also allows tourists travelling from Melbourne to connect with the Indian Pacific service to Perth and the world-renowned Ghan journey.
