Statement from Ixion Model Railways Ltd
I have decided to down size my layout, I have been reading about downsizing here on MRH for awhile. The existing layout takes up most of my one car garage and I need more storage space. The layout is double deck point to point J shaped with the helix at on end of the J. Each level has a 4 track yard and two staging tracks the lower level also has an additional one track staging inside the helix. I have fourteen industries and two engine servicing facilities. You can see the existing track plan on my web site, https://jerseynorthern.webs.com under (the layout).
The layout has been built over a period of 35 years with code 100 track and was converted to DCC. Maintenance has become and issue and scenery is about 80 percent complete on it. What I am planning to do after lots of thought on it is to remove the yard and everything from the upper section that’s next to the wall (long side of the J) as most of this has no scenery. I can salvage most of the track to reuse. The lower level yard will remain but the rest of the lower level along the wall will be removed. The upper and lower sections along the wall be be shortened by about 3 feet.
The helix would be salvaged and relocated to the ends of the remaining upper and lower sections along the wall. The short end and bottom of the J would be removed. The track and scenery on top of the helix would be removed and redesigned. I would need to modify all the track were the new joints would be between the helix and the revised upper and lower sections of the layout. I need to draw this up to see how it would work, I think it will. The upper level along the wall will be redesigned to accommodate some industries and a town area. I would not have the two lower hidden staging tracks anymore but would retain the one that’s inside the helix. The two existing hidden staging on the upper level would be removed and replaced with a new one or two track hidden staging along the wall. I would retain about 8 or more of the industries and one engine facility. Below is the foot print and of the downsized layout, the helix is 48” in diameter with a 22 inch radius. The upper and lower sections are 18 inches wide, the lower level is 18 feet long and the upper is 15 feet long. I don’t have a track plan with dimensions yet but when I do I will post it for comments.
