The new trains are equipped with Stadler’s Gaurdia ETCS system for operation under both ETCS levels 1 and 2, as well as the conventional Polish safety systems. The trains are designed to enable dynamic switching between systems without the need to stop.
After approval for service is obtained, the first two trains from the contract will be put into supervised operation in passenger traffic for 6-12 months to achieve a mileage of at least 150,000km per vehicle.
The trains, assembled at the Stadler Polska plant at Siedlce, east of Warsaw were ordered in a Zlotys 1bn ($US 260m) contract in 2019. As part of the contract Stadler will provide the new fleet with technical maintenance service for a period of 15 years.
The new trains will extend PKP InterCity’s Flirt fleet to 32 trains; the first batch of 20 were delivered between 2015 and 2017.
