Commuters will be forced to spend even longer than first expected on substitute buses as both timelines and costs of the Gawler rail line’s electrification blow out.According to The Advertiser, the State Government is set to announce on Tuesday that the project is now over budget by around $100 million, while the completion date is now set to be months later than planned.
The news will mean commuters will be forced to spend months more on buses than they might have been planning.
Originally, the line was set to be closed in full from Boxing Day through until the end of January, with another closure during the April school holidays.
However, those in charge of the state’s infrastructure have now decided to keep the line closed from Boxing Day through until the end of the April school holidays to make up for lost time through 2020.
Substitute buses will be scheduled in place of the trains.
The total cost of the electrification project now sits at $715 million, up from $615 million. The State Government is laying the blame for the blowout at their Labor predecessors who, they say, failed to plan the project properly.
It is a charge that Labor has rubbished, with a spokesperson for leader Tom Koutsantonis telling The Advertiser that “After almost three years and two transport ministers, the audacity of Mr Wingard to blame Labor is breathtaking.”
