Leongatha contractor BJ’s Earthmoving has won a contract to remove sleepers and rails from the rail corridor between Leongatha and Nyora as the first step in the extension of the Great Southern Rail Trail.
The company has set up a work site at Ruby and rail removal got underway this morning.
A contamination report commissioned by South Gippsland Shire Council confirmed that the sleepers and rail were safe to remove but the ballast should be left in place.
It also found the soil along the track was “suitable to remain on site for the proposed public open space land use (rail trail)”, a council spokesperson said.
