Glenelg Mayor Geoff White says Federal Government funding for road and rail improvements in the municipality will probably come too late to help with the wheat harvest.
Wheat is about to be exported from the Port of Portland for the first time in two-and-a-half years.
Councillor White has been lobbying the Federal Government to fund road and rail upgrades in the shire before the blue gum plantation harvest starts.
He says the wheat harvest is expected to be huge and the region's roads will be under stress.
"The existing road network is not in a position to handle the massive freight task that's going to cross our roads to the port in the foreseeable future, and with the grain harvest now coming up shortly, the sooner we can get some funding the better," he said.
