THE CEO of São Paulo Metro, Mr Silvani Pereira, has confirmed that a new 21.8km metro line will be constructed in the next decade.

Pereira, speaking at the 22nd NT Expo, Negócios nos Trilhos, held in São Paulo last week, said that Line 16-Violet would run from Oscar Freire, near Avenida Paulista, to Jardim Brasília, in the east of the city and is expected to cost Reais 18.906bn ($US 3.82bn).

The line will feature 21 stations and require the construction of a new depot. Trains will operate with 2min 30s headways and the line is expected to transport 630,060 passengers per working day when it opens in 2034.

The line will connect with Line 4-Yellow at Oscar Freire station and run parallel to Line 2-Green. At Jardim Paulista station the new line will connect with the future Line 19-Celeste and at Paraíso station with the Metro lines 1-Blue and 2-Green.

At Sao Carlos station, the new line will connect with Metro lines 10-Turquoise and 13-Jade of the São Paulo Metropolitan Trains Company (CPTM) suburban network. In addition, the line will offer another connection with Line 2-Green at Anália Franco.

“The objective with this line is to decentralise the flow of passengers on lines 3-Red, 11-Coral and 15-Silver and promote the diversification of routes and integration between active transport,” Pereira says.

The main challenges facing construction of the line include natural barriers such as the Tamanduateí, Tatuapé and Aricanduva rivers, and an interchange with CPTM Line 10-Turquoise.
