HIGH-TECH cancer treatment equipment at the Prince of Wales Hospital will be severely affected by noise and vibrations from the South East Light Rail link, health authorities fear.
Construction, and passing trams once the project is built, could disrupt ultra-sensitive linear accelerators which use high-energy X-rays to destroy tumours.
Three accelerators, placed underground, are being installed at a new $76 million cancer treatment centre at the PoW in Randwick.
In its written submission to the state government’s light rail environmental impact statement (EIS), the government’s Health Infrastructure (HI) agency also said a proposed construction site would encroach on hospital land and “make hospital operations during the construction period impossible”.
It also said access for ambulances to the neighbouring Sydney Children’s Hospital’s emergency department could be affected.
The $1.6 billion CBD and South East Light Rail is proposed to run from Circular Quay to Randwick and Kingsford, via Surry Hills. Construction of the rail and stops near the hospital campus is expected to take about 19 months.
HI chief Sam Sangster said the potential impact on hospital operations “has not been properly assessed”.
“No allowance for the future operations of the approved Prince of Wales’ Nelune Comprehensive Cancer and Advanced Treatment Centre has been included,” Mr Sangster said.
“Linear accelerators located in underground bunkers (corner of High St/Avoca St) are highly sensitive to vibration and need detailed consideration and formulation of mitigation measures.”
In other EIS submissions, the Education Department asked Transport for NSW to install thicker glass in school windows along the route, including at Sydney Boys High, Sydney Girls High, Randwick Boys High and Randwick Girls High, to keep out noise and dust during construction.
A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said: “Transport for NSW also committed to carry out further investigations of potential vibration impacts on hospital buildings during the project’s design stage. Light rail will be quieter than buses.”
