VOSSLOH has announced that it has been awarded a contract worth over €40m to supply rail fastening systems for Egypt’s first high-speed line.
Designed for operation at up to 250km/h, phase one of the new route will run for 460km from El-Alamein to Ain Sokhna, with phase two comprising a 200km extension from El Alamein to Marsa Matrouh.
Construction is taking place under a turnkey contract awarded by the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) to Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction and The Arab Contractors in 2021.
Vossloh Fastening Systems is due to begin deliveries later this year, with completion of the project expected during the course of 2024.
The new line is expected to cut journey times by 50% and reduce CO2 emissions by 70% when compared with road transport.
Further phases of the Egyptian new line construction programme will see the high-speed network grow to 2000km under a second 15-year turnkey contract awarded to Siemens and its partners.
“We are delighted to be able to make a substantial contribution to this landmark project in this region,” says Mr Jan Furnivall, chief operating officer at Vossloh. “Our extensive experience with the equipment of high-speed lines will allow us to create significant value for our customers.”
