Australian National's ill fated Explorer 'tourist' train seen at Gawler on 9 March 1994. Alco 'World' DL500B 961 was given a Dulux overhaul to haul the train earning it limited celebrity status in enthusiast circles.
After being launched during Easter week in 1993, it soon fell foul of the corporate bean counters at 1 Richmond Road, Keswick and was loaded up with numerous overhead costs which saw it quickly price itself out of the market.
In 1994 it was only used twice, both corporate charters. This was the first of the two, to the Barossa Valley. It went to Balaklava a couple of months later and then that was it. Arguably before it's time, it would probably turn a quid in these more hedonistic days.
