With the steep climb into Emerald fast approaching, fireman Murray Holmes has put on a load of coal and opened 6A right up as it approaches Clematis station, on the straight immediately before the start of the climb. Murray's brother, Keith, can be seen to the right of shot, and Keith's son was standing next to me.
The headboard is in recognition of a special event was held at Puffing Billy, to celebrate three major events in the history of the society: the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society; the 50th anniversary of the re-opening of the Menzies Creek - Emerald section, and the launch of "Saving Puffing Billy Volume 1", a wonderfully detailed and decorated book documenting the first ten years of the society.
Today the railway flourishes, carrying record numbers of passengers and undertaking major projects. The book helps put all this success into perspective: it was a real struggle in those early years.
