Users of the $1.5 billion myki smart card have discovered an upside to the complicated and much-criticised public transport ticketing system: it pays travellers $1.52 to take a trip in the right circumstances.
The Andrews government's transport authority has confirmed the smart card dividend, discovered this week, and says it is not a flaw.
"This is a known fare processing scenario and the system is working as it should," Public Transport Victoria spokesman Adrian Darwent says.
The system provides the $1.52 credit to travellers with a zone one smartcard, bought before January 1, when they travel into zone two on a weekend on two separate occasions.
